The Affenpinscher is one of the most ancient of all toy dogs, and is believed to have been a major influence in the development of many of the smaller rough-coated breeds of Europe.

This dog breed was an efficient ratter around stables, on farms or in stores. The smaller versions became companions in the home and kept mice at a minimum.
